BACKGROUND:  The Township is operating under a moratorium against the issuance of permits for any land use involving the “creation or alteration of any manmade or artificial body of water within 50 feet of the ordinary high water mark of the adjacent lake”.   The moratorium expires on July 27, 2022.  There has recently been renewed scrutiny of existing shoreline regulations on the part of the public and staff. The Planning Commission has appointed a Shoreline Subcommittee to oversee a process to recommend refinements to current policy and regulations relating to shoreline development. The subcommittee will report back to the full Planning Commission upon completion of their recommendations.

THE SHORELINE STEERING COMMITTEE

The Township is currently developing a roster for a planned Shoreline Steering Committee. The Steering Committee’s membership will broadly represent riparian owners from the various lakes and types of lakes within Long Lake Township and at-large members who will serve as technical resources. The Shoreline Steering Committee will work with Planning Commission’s 3-member Shoreline Subcommittee to help guide this effort to update shoreline regulations and policies. The Township is also separately seeking the professional services of an attorney specializing in riparian issues, a public engagement specialist, and an environmental consultant to round out a consultant team to assist the Shoreline Subcommittee.

The Shoreline Steering Committee’s work is expected to last over several months and will entail attendance at several public meetings. The exact structure of meetings and means of finding areas of consensus will be determined in consultation with the consulting public engagement specialist.
